Three Local Businesses Support Philanthropy
CF Release - July 14, 2010

The Community Foundation of the Quincy Area has awarded grants totaling more than $17,000 to eight organizations, thanks to the generosity and foresight of three local businesses - a law firm, a manufacturer, and a bank. Each established funds with the Community Foundation to provide a permanent source of support for charitable organizations and causes in the community.

The grants from the respective funds this year benefit the following organizations:

Schmiedeskamp, Robertson, Neu & Mitchell Fund
- The Blessing Foundation
- Community Foundation of the Quincy Area
- Good Samaritan Home of Quincy
- Quincy Public Schools Foundation
- Transitions of Western Illinois Foundation

Each grant from the Schmiedeskamp, Robertson, Neu & Mitchell Fund was made for the organizations to use as needed. The law firm set an example for others in 2003 when it became the first business entity to establish a fund with the Community Foundation. Since then, the fund has granted nearly $85,000 to not-for-profit organizations.

Gardner Denver Education Fund
- Junior Achievement of the Mississippi Valley, Inc.
- Quincy Notre Dame Foundation

The grant to Junior Achievement supports 'Success Skills and Business Ethics' curriculum in Quincy schools. The grant to Quincy Notre Dame supports the math and science tutoring program. The Gardner Denver Education Fund was established in 2005 to further the company's belief that a strong community, with excellent educational opportunities is integral to the company's and community's future success. To date, the fund has granted more than $26,000 to support education.

Mercantile Endowment Fund
- United Way of Adams County, Inc.

The grant was made for the organization to use as needed. Since establishing a fund with the Community Foundation in 2006 to mark the bank's 100th anniversary, the Mercantile Endowment Fund has granted more than $2,700 to local organizations.

The Community Foundation helps build permanent funds to address significant needs and opportunities now and in the future in 13 tri-state counties. The earnings on these funds are then used, in accordance with donor wishes, for grantmaking and community leadership activities.

Since 1999, the Community Foundation has awarded more than 730 grants totaling more than $1.2 million providing local support for various programs and projects in the tri-states. The Community Foundation is a publicly-supported 501 (c) (3) organization to which contributions are tax deductible.
