Palmyra Community Endowment Fund

“Palmyra was his heart and soul, and he gave it the best of his life and career,” says Irene Meyers of her father, Donald Hevel Sr., who served as Palmyra’s superintendent of schools for 19 years. His “long-standing love” for the town inspired his family to establish the Palmyra Community Endowment Fund in his memory.

Though the fund has been established using family donations and the memorial money offered for Hevel, who passed away May 10, 2006, his family wants to emphasize that it is not a “Hevel” fund. The fund’s goal is to assist with community projects and program support.

“It is for Palmyra, and we encourage others to take part in building a better community,” says Meyers. “Our family gave careful consideration to this. We appreciate that anyone can add to the fund at any time and that grants from the fund will always be used to benefit Palmyra’s interests.”

The first fund of its kind—established to benefit a particular community—the Palmyra Community Endowment Fund sets an important precedent for others wishing to leave a lasting legacy in their own communities.
