Jeffrey G. & Theresa L. Spear Fund

Few places are more important to Jeff and Theresa Spear than their church. They have been members of Luther Memorial Church for 28 years and have delivered the children’s sermon since 1987. During those years, Jeff and Theresa forged a strong connection with the young people in their church. Each week, they figure out how to relate religious lessons to a child’s point of view, a challenge they said has made them grow in unexpected ways. But it’s a task they truly enjoy.

“It’s very good for us,” Theresa said. “And it’s important not to forget the little people of the world.”

The couple also has not forgotten their church. Jeff and Theresa established an endowment with the Community Foundation of the Quincy Area. The Jeffrey G. and Theresa L. Spear Fund will continue to benefit Luther Memorial even after they’re gone.

“Our church is a community where there are no pretenses,” Theresa said. “It’s given us what we need, and we wanted to give back.”

The endowment will provide the church with a steady source of income for years to come, and that income can be used by the church for whatever need is most important that year.

“We didn’t want to wait until we died to leave money for our church,” said Jeff. “We thought, ‘Why not start doing something now?’”

The Community Foundation has given them the opportunity to do just that.
